February 2026 Google Discover Update: Key Changes and Impact

Google has announced the rollout of its February 2026 Discover core update, a broad systems update focused on how content is selected and displayed within Google Discover.

According to Google, the update is designed to improve the overall Discover experience by prioritizing locally relevant content, reducing sensational and clickbait-style articles, and highlighting original, in-depth reporting from sources with demonstrated expertise.

“This is a broad update to our systems that surface articles in Discover,” Google stated.

The rollout has begun for English-language users in the United States and is expected to expand to all countries and languages over the coming months. Google noted that the full rollout may take up to two weeks to complete.

Key Changes in the Discover Core Update

Google outlined several improvements introduced with this update:

  • Greater visibility for locally relevant content from websites based in a user’s country
  • Reduced exposure for sensational or clickbait-driven content
  • Increased emphasis on timely, original, and in-depth content from publishers with proven subject-matter expertise

Because the update prioritizes content from sources within a user’s country, some non-U.S. publishers targeting U.S. audiences may experience a decline in Discover traffic. Google added that this impact could lessen or reverse as the update expands globally.

How Google Evaluates Expertise

Google clarified that its systems assess expertise on a topic-by-topic basis rather than at a site-wide level. This means that websites covering a wide range of subjects can still be recognized for authority in specific areas.

For example, Google explained that a local news website with a dedicated gardening section could be recognized as an authoritative source on gardening, even if it publishes content across multiple topics. In contrast, a site that primarily reviews movies but publishes a single gardening article is unlikely to be considered an expert in that area.

Google also emphasized that Discover will continue to show personalized content based on individual user preferences for creators and sources.

Expected Impact and Traffic Fluctuations

Google cautioned publishers to expect potential fluctuations in Discover traffic as the update rolls out.

“Some sites might see increases or decreases; many sites may see no change at all,” Google said.

During internal testing, Google found that users considered the updated Discover experience to be more useful and valuable.

Why This Matters

Publishers that rely on Google Discover for traffic should monitor performance closely over the coming days and weeks. Google advises site owners to follow its general core update guidance and refer to the official “Get on Discover” documentation for best practices.

As with previous core updates, Google reiterated that there are no specific fixes for ranking changes beyond creating high-quality, original content that serves users effectively.
